Senior Director, Engineering Shared Services

The Senior Director, Engineering Shared Services owns and develops a series of shared services and customer-facing features in Watermark’s growing suite for Higher Education. They are the direct manager for roughly 12 full- and part-time employees, and an active influencer and mentor for product architects throughout the company. They develop and refine the systems that bring our point solutions together by defining integration points and strategies, the underlying technology to scale those solutions across public and private cloud, and application architecture recommendations. This person and their team establish and refine architectural guidelines that apply to application development throughout Watermark. Watermark includes a mix of software technologies and stacks, as would be found in any aggregated environment, requiring a strong foundation in application development and architecture. Our product demands a consistent customer focus and iterative delivery of the product. This role is extremely collaborative with other functions including Product Management and Design, Application Engineering, and Sales, and must interface with peer owners of other software components and products. The position reports directly to the Chief Product & Technology Officer.
Defines or extends solutions which connect applications of varying tech stacks into a series of shared services, across public and private cloud.
Identifies candidate services for centralization.
Manages the activities related to the design, development and maintenance of the Enterprise Architecture (EA).
Recommends and participates in the analysis, evaluation and development of enterprise long term strategic and operating plans to ensure objectives are consistent with the enterprise’s long-term business objectives.
Collaborates with all relevant parties in order to review the objectives and constraints of solutions. Recommends the most suitable technical architecture and defines the solution at a high level.
Direct and implement the strategy for the development of technology architecture work.
Researches overall technical solutions on the market for particular technical requirements and business needs.
Shares best practices, lessons learned and constantly updates the technical system architecture requirements based on changing technologies, and knowledge related to recent, current and upcoming vendor products and solutions.
Identifies and recommends areas appropriate for further study and participates in any Proof of Concept projects required to thoroughly investigate architectural possibilities and strengthen arguments for their adoption.
Identifies implementation risks and analyses potential impact on the enterprise and on the achievement of scheduled objectives.
Acts as manager for a team of software architects and software developers.
Minimum of five years relevant technical experience
Experience as technical lead for a major technology implementation
Led initiatives of a size and complexity that is commensurate with this position's role in our future strategic plan
Experience with Data Integration Projects
Familiarity with REST based APIs
Familiarity using various authentication systems, oauth, token based, etc.
Familiarity with several programming languages (nice to have: direct experience with Functional Languages in addition to OOP)
Experience with Web Front End Frameworks (Angular, React/Redux, Elm, etc.)
Has proven success with a variety of technologies and tech stacks
